Capeweed Find a Weed

(Arctotheca calendula) A drive in the country in spring often highlights paddocks covered in yellow – a sure sign of a major infestation of Cape Weed, which hails originally from Lesotho and South Africa. An annual, rosette-forming herb with a deep tap root, individual plants may reach 80cm in width and 30cm or so in height.  Its leaves are usually grey-green with the undersides white. Its pale yellow flowers have a very prominent black eye and are the daisy most often used to make daisy-chains. Seeds are dispersed by wind, stock and water. Cape Weed is browsed by cattle but is thought to taint milk. It dies out over summer, to re-appear in the following autumn.
